Description
Cortavance is a prescription topical spray used to treat itchy, inflamed skin and atopic dermatitis in dogs. It contains hydrocortisone aceponate, a potent steroid that provides rapid relief with minimal risk of the side effects often caused by steroid tablets.
How It Works & Dosage
- Active Ingredient: Hydrocortisone aceponate (0.584 mg/mL).
- Application: Hold the spray bottle about 10 cm away from the affected skin and press the pump twice to treat an area the size of a 10 cm x 10 cm square.
- Usage: Usually applied once daily for a standard course of 7 days.
- Safety: The steroid accumulates directly in the skin where it is needed and breaks down quickly, meaning very little is absorbed into the rest of the dog's bloodstream. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Important Safety Information
- Prescription Required: You must obtain this medication through a licensed veterinarian.
- Dosage Limits: Do not treat more than \(1/3\) of your dog's total body surface area at one time (e.g., no more than both flanks).
- Contraindications: Do not use on open cutaneous ulcers or on dogs suffering from Cushing's Disease (hyperadrenocorticism).
- Special Cases: It is not recommended for young puppies (under 7 months) or breeding, pregnant, or lactating dogs.
- Concurrent Infections: If your dog has an active microbial or fungal infection or a flea infestation, your vet will need to treat those alongside Cortavance.
